You put up some decent ideas on the Fund raiser front, but the primary problem is bringing in consistent cash flow instead of the one time shots. I'm not sure that this will work in the context of a FCPOA, but we setup a "Geedunk" at the command. The powers that be got behind it and manning is provided by two TAD bodies on six month rotations. The installations instructions didn't say we couldn't do it per se, and we don't directly compete w/ the NEX backed machines (they sell Pepsi products, we sell Coke... etc...). Profit comes in everyday and it provides a valuable service to the Sailor's (I.E. taking money from people who don't receive BAS)... haha... But it takes some pressure off MWR to constantly be conducting lame fund raisers.

I think the blind auction idea is really great. The "Sailor Relief Fund," however, isn't but only because I know what people have to go through at NMCRS and they make sure people aren't lying, which happens a lot. A lot. People will spend their last dime on getting a nipple ring while their kid is starving and then come to you with their hand out. Trust me. I've seen it. Sad but true.

Jim,
If you know where NRTF Totsuka is, (now decommed) there is about 25 basball fields out on the old antenna fields. During the weekend, those baseball fields are chock full from sunup to sundown. One can set up hotdog and beer sales there and make a killing. When I was stationed there, we would haul in about $30K for MWR in a single weekend, but we had lots of volunteers and it was a lot of work.

The topless car wash is a sure way of getting shutdown before you make a dime. Unless you do it like this: have one of the local hotties in a bikini out front with a sign saying "Topless Car Wash", she collects the donations before the car goes into the "seclusion zone". Once in the seclusion zone, one finds themselves surrounded by topless, fat, harry guys washing their car. It's all in good fun, and nobody violates any base regs.

I recently saw a story on AFN where Kitty Hawk sailors had to keep their hands on a jet parked in the hangar. The one that kept some part of their body on the jet the longest won a prize. Instead of destroying the car, which sounds like fun but I doubt you would ever get authorization for, you could charge five bucks to get a hand on the car and the one that holds on the longest gets a prize.

Well Jimbo, as much as I hate to hail on your parade, number six just flat will never happen.

Aside from the obvious fact it would offend everyone and their brother (according to the Navy's point of view), finding "a few of our more attractive volunteers" in this place will be (and I've toned this one down!) an exercise in futility.

I really like the bagging groceries idea. I know whenever I go to the grocery store and they are doing some fund raiser for kids with leukemia or whatever, it's usually something where they automatically add an extra dollar to my total and then have me write my name on a piece of paper shaped like a balloon or a star. When they ask if I'd like to donate a dollar, I feel like a total ass if I say no. Usually they end up putting all the paper shapes up on the windows and walls, and toward the end they've made thousands of dollars. I wonder if you guys could work something like that into the whole thing. Regardless, if the cashier told me you guys were bagging groceries for donations and asked if I'd like to donate a dollar, I don't think I could say no, especially with you standing right there bagging up my groceries whether I donate or not. If someone were to say no, just put their milk on top of their bread. ;)

The topless car wash fun raiser is a great idea as well, but if passerby know it's for the Navy, they'll also know there has to be a catch because the Navy would obviously never allow that. I'd probably expect to see a bunch of topless guys washing cars once I pulled around back.

Turtleberry: Doh! I forgot to mention one of our FC1's suggested the dunk tank for an upcoming picnic. The MCPO's cleaning a barracks room is pretty good too.

Squid Vicious: Pfft! You think I want some dirty rag scraping off my car's sweet ass spray paint job? What self respecting owner of a SpongeBob painted car would accept scratched water bubbles???

Jim, I've seen your car -- and if it is the same one you were driving about a year ago, to put this lightly, I don't think you have anything to worry about from dirty water or rags.

I'm just saying, that's all.

A great idea I saw at my command was dunking the chiefs event like they have at fairs, buy a ball and hit the target to drop your chiefs in the water. Getting a dunk tank might be difficult over there but I know that made a lot of money.
Pretty much anything involving the higher ups made a lot of money. We had a raffle with petty officers offering to cook a meal for the highest bidder, and the biggest winner was having two master chiefs clean your room that went to the highest bidders. (I was told the room cleaning event was put on youtube) We also do softball games and car washes but I don't think those make quite as much.

The money goes to the navy day ball, a hotel party on the navy's birthday.
