The beloved chu-hi stand, officially known as KADOYA, has been put on the off-limits list for the month of July. CFAY sent the owner’s a letter informing them that the establishment will be off-limits to all Armed Forces personnel, citing public drunkenness and noise complaints. This should come as no surprise to anyone whose taken a train from the Shiori Station at night, and could hear all the drunken happenings from below. The chu-hi stand, which right around the corner from the station, is a popular spot where Sailors stop for a few strong drinks before crawling the rest of The Honch, or heading to Roppongi or other farther away party areas. CFAY said the off-limits status will be reviewed at the end of the month, but I’m curious how the owners of the stand can really change anything. As you can see from the picture above, the stand can only accommodate about two people, so everyone just stands around outside and drinks. They have a sign that says “IF YOU WANT KADOYA TO STAY OPEN THEN PLEASE BE QUITE![sic]” and it’s even a regular post for Shore Patrol, but a few of those loud and rowdy Sailors will always ruin it for the rest of us.

Glad to see you back, Jim. You should devote an entry solely for folks who want to praise or damn you. It’s the American way, and you’re just a Navy Guy Living in Japan, after all.
As for the nightclub spot, I live five inches from the Daiei and I can sometimes hear that place. Keep in mind there’s a 100+foot building standing in between us.
I’ll never forget the words my brother said to me the first time I went downtown for a drink. Keep in mind this was Germany. I had just turned 16 and was legal there. He said “you know that warm, fuzzy, happy feeling you get after having a beer or three?” I nodded happily. Oh yes, it was a delightful experience indeed!
“Yeah, that’s such a great feeling! I want to hug the world!” I said.
He continued, “Yes! You know that feeling! Your teeth feel slightly numb, you feel like dancing, life is good, everything is great.”
I nodded vigorously.
“STOP DRINKING THEN. It never, ever, ever gets better than that, no matter how much more you drink.”
If it were so simple…

So, add Chu-Hi and you get this little place full of red-faced Kool-Aid guys bursting through walls and down to the Honch.

Posted 02 Jul 2008 at 5:49 pm ¶I enjoy reading your blog and I too wear khaki’s. It helps me guage the thoughts of my sailors and in turn understand thier highs and lows.
It keeps it real and my ear at the deck plate level.
That way I can “keep it real”. -the dude
This site is like crack now, i check it almost as much as i check my damn email at work

Posted 02 Jul 2008 at 8:41 pm ¶I think if the sailors enjoy drinking at that place, they would police it themselves. Like tell the idiot next to you making all the noise to shut the hell up and stop acting like a freaking moron! But that’s only if they really cared.
Posted 03 Jul 2008 at 2:04 am ¶Jim - The real issue is the Navy, in full public view has, for many years, been allowing our SOFA-sponsored personnel to act inappropriately in this drinking hole, and we were doing it right in front of Shore Patrol! Isn’t it a violation of some CFAY reg. that you can’t have an “open alcohol container” in public? Bottom line - the owner has to enclose his bar to keep the noise down, change clientelle, or shut it down. Rumor has it that people standing Shore Patrol got sick of baby-sitting this dump, used their chain of commands, and got leadership involved (finally). Good call Capt Weed!

I went there once with a group of friends, and the stand seems to be fun when there aren’t many people around being buttholes. It was really quiet the night we went though, we just sat there and talked. I think people just overdo it and get stupid drunk. It’s not like it’s a loud bar and you have to be loud to talk over the blaring music…
Posted 03 Jul 2008 at 5:25 pm ¶For Luna - oh my god now fashion sense is a requirement for drinking in public. Spare me.
Here’s the thing, a few sailors ruined it for WHO? for a guy who is trying to run a bar. The Navy just cut off his clientele because apparently he couldn’t babysit everybody who showed up. Sailors? they can go drink someplace else. There’s no shortage.
Posted 04 Jul 2008 at 3:19 am ¶But it’s always somebody else who has to take action, isn’t it? Because the peeps who go there can’t control themselves.
Spendthrift, I was just making an off the cuff remark…as I often do. It’s funny how when we SOFA folks go out we all stick out like a sore thumb, even though we’re told to blend in and not draw attention to ourselves. I’m sure you’ve seen the AFN propaganda. No matter what, we will stand out and make a scene. Perhaps my wording was a bit harsh but I still think this photo exemplifies what not to do, not so much as “What not to Wear”.
Posted 04 Jul 2008 at 11:41 am ¶well that sucks. Chu-hi’s are awesome and now my 2nd most miss place is off limits. Well it’s not like I can go there any more any ways
Posted 05 Jul 2008 at 4:51 am ¶Hey Dude….
Posted 05 Jul 2008 at 5:23 pm ¶No need to call me a jackass, as a matter of fact, I will renownce my “dude” call sign and raise you one. Ask your Honch Ho if she knows me? Bwwwwaaaaaaaaaaa!
Have a nice day…… asshole : )
Whatever happened to small house parties and gatherings? They’re cheaper, safer, and you’re only surrounded by your friends rather than a bunch of drunk assholes you don’t know and don’t want to know. Am I just getting old?
Posted 10 Jul 2008 at 12:24 pm ¶Yes, you’re getting old if you have to ask that question. :*

Okay, this is totally trivial but it annoys me when people call the place featured in your post as “the chuhai stand.” It’s not.
It was opened the Summer of 2006. The one and only chuhai stand is, as you probably know, located around the corner by Hideyoshi and his family.
People need to relax around there anyway. Although I’m one of the Americans that aren’t screaming to converse, I can still see the other side which is that he’s closed before the 10pm noise-complaint cut-off, (last call is 8:50 I think?) and it’s freaking downtown Yokosuka for crying outloud!
Anyway, cheers!
Posted 29 Aug 2008 at 10:44 pm ¶Jessica: It’s a stand that serves chu-his, thus it’s called the Chu-hi Stand. We could have ten of them, and they’d all be the chu-hi stand. Taliban taco isn’t really named Taliban taco, but ask anyone where it is and voila. Welcome to the world of simple Sailors and their jargon. Thanks for the clarification.
