Yes, I know this is the coolest title I’ve had for any entry yet. I saw this video on YouTube a few days ago, but since the Navy is super lame and blocks it, I’ve uploaded it to DailyMotion for all to see. The video, originally titled “Night Stalkers in Japan,” is an Australian news report on young Australian women who move to and work in Japan, many in the “hostess” industry, and the Japanese psychos that prey on them. It starts out with Japan’s own “Hannibal Lecter,” Issei Sagawa. 20 some years ago he was arrested in France for murdering and eating a young woman, Renée Hartevelt. Deemed incurably insane he was deported back to Japan to be tried. Due to his family being wealthy, and the Japanese police force being easily swayed by money, he never spent a single day in jail.

It then follows him as he prowls the streets of everyone’s favorite hangout, Roppongi in Tokyo. He visits a hostess bar that has a bunch of young Australian girls, bars of which non-Japanese are not allowed in. They laugh with him as he introduces himself as James Bond, and then end up giving him their personal phone numbers. I guess it’s not too bad. Mr. Sagawa says he’s not all bad:

Never…never…at least kill, never. Of course I want to eat the meat of young beautiful girls, that has not changed at all. So I know now that killing is really terrible, so uh, for eating, I never kill.

How can you not love this guy, am I right? The news report also talks about Joji Obara, a rich young playboy who was eventually arrested for the rape and murder of Australians Carita Ridgeway and Lucie Blackman. Many of the foreign women who work in these Japanese-only bars can usually be bought by paying a bar-fine, which requires them to accompany Japanese men on “dates.” Mr. Obara’s favorite date was drugging a woman, raping her when she was unconscious, and filming it. When his apartment was raided for Carita Ridgeway’s death, they found about 4,000 to 5,000 video tapes of his personal “conquests.” It’s estimated he drugged and raped anywhere between 150 to 400 women.

Our lovable cannibal, Mr. Sagawa sums it up when asked by the reporter if the foreign women working in Roppongi were in danger:

Of course. It’s very very dangerous, because the customers are very rich. They can do everything.

And how do the upstanding citizens of Japan treat such a psychopath?

Sagawa now lives in Tokyo and is a minor celebrity in Japan. He is often invited as a guest speaker and commentator. He also writes restaurant reviews and in 1992 he appeared in Hisayasu Sato’s film Sisenjiyou no Aria (The Bedroom) as a sadosexual voyeur. He admits to still having fantasies about cannibalism, but says he never wants to realize them again.

Besides books about the murder he committed, Sagawa wrote a commentary book Shonen A in 1997 on the Kobe Children’s Serial Murder of 1997, when a 14-year-old called “Boy A” (”Shonen A”) killed and decapitated a child.
