This isn’t meant to be entirely serious, but it was too funny for me not to post. In a thread about the 7th Fleet liberty restrictions on Military.com’s forums, one person suggested that all the stuff that’s been going shouldn’t be blamed on the Navy. Instead, the author writes, it should be the responsibility of the Japanese. I don’t even know what that means to be honest with you. Regardless, another poster named AoiSonlee, who apparently is an officer on the USS John S McCain, replied to the original post with a break down of how regardless of what goes on in Seventh Fleet, it’s the fault of the Division Officers (DIVOs). This is so awesome:
I don’t blame the Japanese. Most of the crap that comes out is of a CYOA nature and the more levels there are in the chain of command the worse it gets. The present situation is entirely of the Navy’s (that is the senior leadership in Japan) making. CNFJ doesn’t want another major incident to happen and get the US kicked out of Japan. But, if such an incident does occur, it will go something lie this:
Japanese Official to US Ambassador: One of your sailors murdered a Japanese citizen. This displeases us and make us wonder if the mutual defense treaty we have is still in our best interests.
POTUS TO CNFJ: WTF, how could you let this happen? Because of you we might get kicked out of Japan!
CNFJ to POTUS: It’s not me sir! I told them they couldn’t drink after midnight or alone and required commands to start having their sailors fill out liberty plans. I did everything I could.CNFJ to CFAY/CSG5: WTF, how could you let this happen? Because of you we might get kicked out of Japan!
CFAY/CSG5 to CNFJ: It’s not our fault sir, we tripled the number of shore patrol in the honch, instigated a policy of command-wide recalls and training in the event of major liberty incidents, and stepped up the random breathalyzers at the front gate.
CSG5 to DESRON15: WTF, how could you let this happen? Because of you we might get kicked out of Japan!
DESRON15 to CSG5: It’s not my fault sir, I told the ships they were supposed to be spot checking their liberty plans regularly and personally require the entire chain of command from LCP to Department Head to come to me and tell me where they went wrong when there’s a liberty incident.DESRON15 to Destroyer CO: WTF, how could you let this happen? Because of you we might get kicked out of Japan!
Destroyer CO to DESRON15: It’s not my fault sir, I personally recalled the entire ship three times and kept the crew overnight twice without even getting orders from you. I also made my Chiefs and divos read the liberty policy, all 70 pages of it, to their divisions in its entirety to get the point across. I’ve also been hammering sailors with 45/45, halfx2, and busts for any violation of the liberty policy.Destroyer CO to Dept Head: WTF, how could you let this happen? Because of you we might get kicked out of Japan!
Dept Head to CO: It’s not my fault sir, I personally recalled the entire department twice on my own for minor incidents just to be sure everyone knew we were serious. I also require my Chiefs and Divos to do 100% spot checks on liberty plans at least one night a week, even though DESRON only require 10%.Dept Head to Divo: WTF, how could you let this happen? Because of you we might get kicked out of Japan!
Divo to Dept Head: WTF, he killed someone, if he didn’t know that was wrong already what the hell was I supposed to do?Divo to Chief: WTF Chief, why didn’t you tell SN Timmy that murder was wrong, now we’re going to get kicked out of Japan!
Chief to Divo: **** you sir.And so clearly, as you can see, it will obviously be a failure of leadership at the division officer level because divos suck at blaiming chiefs for things that really aren’t their fault and getting them to believe it.
Man, Officers can be pretty funny guys sometimes. AoiSonlee, you Sir, are my hero.

Sorry that I haven’t responded, but it’s because I’ve just given up.
I made the connection when I was at home on leave trying to explain this stuff.
One… ONE… ONE STUPID GUY has wires sticking out of his shoes and tries to light them.
What happens? We all know: REMOVE YOUR SHOES AND X-RAY them before boarding an aircraft. EVERYONE!
I, and many of you, have witnessed “little old grannies” getting frisked and circumnavigated by metal detectors. In the interest of avoiding “profiling” (I’m sure), white-haired old black men have received the same treatment… I know… I SAW IT.
This country is falling lock-step into to path that the true terrorists wish to lead her on. Our society is being disrupted… That is their goal. It sickens me that “they” are winning.
It’s not an individual ship, nor this Navy that I was once so proud to serve in, it is a WACKY government setting the tone for the Daffy Duck style leadership that we have been dealt with.
Is it true that our lives have been seriously altered by the actions of one, or have have our lives been MADE to be altered in response to that?
Jim, I’m just a rat… jumping ship before it sinks. I want no part of this after my present enlistment is over.
I will do my job to the best of my abilities and even point out the MANY benefits of Naval service to those around me. I used to LOVE the Navy, and many of the reasons are still true. I don’t regret a minute of my service, and I don’t feel like I have “wasted time”, like several have mentioned when I told them that I was getting out at 12 years.
The best times, and best years of my life were served in the United States Navy, but I’m not about to spend any more of my life in this strange distortion of the force that defeated Hitler and Japan.
I dearly love Japan and the Japanese people are absolutely wonderful, but do you really think that we would have “liberty plans” if Nimitz was in charge?
How about MacArthur?
Yep, we used to win wars…

Instead of these stupid rules they should make the enlistment process a little bit tougher. Weed them out before they get here and then you don’t have the problems we have now. They let any one into this organization and we are getting fucked by it.

It’s the same reason the “preachers daughers’” are freaks in my opinion. You keep the couped up in the house, don’t let them out and experience the real world. Once they get that chance they don’t know what to do except go crazy. S
Same thing with the Navy and the sailors over here. Lets restrict them even more so that once we let them go, they’re going to want to do whatever they want when the time comes. Being a shore sailor I guess I take ILP’s for granted and I feel your pain, to a certain degree…

Zumwalt took all the power away from the senior PO’s. That was a big mistake, and one reason I got out when I did. Sure, I admit that I was a Alcoholic First Class. I just wish someone would have put me in my place alot sooner than they did.
Which brings to mind one good lesson I learned. A Chief Commissaryman ‘asked’ me to give him a hand with his inventory since I was in the duty section. I said “Chief - I don’t work for you, get one of your cooks to do it”. I turned around and started to walk away when all of a sudden I found myself literally flying. He stuck his size 12 foot, with some force, in my ass. From then on I respected authority. At that time I was just an E-2. I took me about 8 hours to inventory his dry goods storeroom, and about 5 days with no liberty. If that were to happen nowdays, the Chief would be the one getting reprimanded for assaulting a junior.
Anyway, getting back to the situation in Japan. I say, put more power into discipline of the offenders by a ‘one on one’ type of training - if you get what I mean. It works.
Yes, I retired some 34 years ago and haven’t had a drink since.

Posted 20 Mar 2008 at 5:04 am ¶Well….in my mind…chiefs all suck anyways. Maybe it’s just becasue Im in aviation and they all (yes, ALL) care only about their so called britherhood and kissing the O’s asses. Makes me ashamed to be one.
