MySpace + Easter Bunny = Killing My Bandwidth!

For the second time in about a week, I got a warning saying my site was maxing out its bandwidth limit. I haven’t had any noticable increase in visitors or comments, so I wasn’t sure what could be causing the spike in traffic. I checked out my logs and quickly noticed a lot of referrers from MySpace accounts. Digging even further, I found hundreds of different MySpace accounts hotlinking my “evil Easter bunny” image from last year. Looking at my stats, you can clearly see that I’ve been getting over 3,000 hits a day this month!!! What really pisses me off about the whole thing, is not one of those hits probably even knows this site exists. Because all the profiles were linking the image, they would just see the image and that’s it. No one even credited my site or me for providing the image. Well, one girl with a Xanga did, but that’s it.

My first move was to prevent hotlinking from MySpace. Unfortunately, not one method of hotlinking I’ve used, or have been able to find online, will work?! It seems like it’s either all sites, including mine, are blocked, or no one is. I think it’s a server configuration problem, so I shot a message to my helpdesk. Hopefully they’ll figure something out. In the meantime, I renamed the original images and replaced them with this warning. They’re useless. I just renamed the images. I upped my bandwidth by 30 more gigs, so I shouldn’t have another issue.

My actual limit is 200GB. I like to restrict each site to an amount they actually need. Originally, I just had 4GB, then 7GB. I upped it to 37GB just to be on the safe side.
